Jeremy Wade is a renowned British biologist and television presenter. He had an incredibly bold idea to use himself to test the fearsome reputation of the Red-Bellied Piranha (Scientific name: Pygocentrus nattereri).
A school of fish swims around him without any intention to attack.
Like sharks, this species of fish has an acute sense of smell, allowing it to detect blood in the water and charge at its target with its sharp teeth. They have also inspired many horror movie directors with their image as a bloodthirsty predator.
Because of this, the red-bellied piranha has become a fearsome predator, but is it really that dangerous?
When Wade dropped a piece of meat into the tank filled with red-bellied piranhas, the meat was indeed torn apart by the fish in no time.
However, he still decided to jump into the tank to verify the fearsome nature of this species, and the results were surprising; the school of fish swam calmly around him without showing any aggression or intent to attack.
