The bridges of China not only benefit the local economy but also redefine the standards of global engineering achievements.
On August 7, 2023, Xinhua News Agency published a series of images showcasing China’s construction of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, a 2,980-meter-long structure that will span the Huajiang River in Guizhou Province, southwestern China.
With a vertical height of 625 meters from the bridge deck to the water surface, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is expected to become the tallest bridge in the world upon its completion in 2025. It will reduce travel time through the canyon from about one hour to just one minute, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is being constructed over the great canyon of the Huajiang River, an area nicknamed “the Earth’s crack.”
Previously, in June 2023, the British newspaper Independent reported that the Beipan River Bridge (or Duge Bridge) held the title of the world’s tallest bridge, standing at 560 meters from the deck to the water surface of the Beipan River. The Beipan River Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge measuring 1,341 meters in length, connecting Liupanshui (in Guizhou Province) and Qujing (in Yunnan Province), and helps reduce travel time by up to three hours.

The Beipan River Bridge has held the record as the tallest bridge in the world since 2016.
If the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is completed on schedule, it will surpass the Beipan River Bridge to become the tallest bridge in the world.
It is reported that the construction of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge began nearly two years ago and is now halfway complete. The bridge is expected to be inaugurated in June 2025.
The construction of the tallest bridge in the world demonstrates China’s relentless efforts to break records in construction capabilities and infrastructure development. The bridge will not only benefit the local economy but also redefine the standards of global engineering achievements.
According to a press conference organized by the provincial government, a variety of sightseeing and entertainment programs related to the bridge are being planned. The bridge is expected to become a significant tourist attraction. Currently, nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges are located in Guizhou, a province surrounded by high mountains.
