Sundeep Hunjan, a 23-year-old woman from Kenya, whose face and scalp were severely disfigured in an acid attack nearly a year ago, has begun to regrow her hair.
After the attack, Sundeep traveled to the UK where she underwent surgery on her neck, face, and eyelids. In her most recent surgery, doctors inserted a silicone balloon under the remaining hair on her scalp, which was then gradually inflated with saline solution to expand and help cover 25% of the scalp area that had been damaged by the acid. Additionally, surgeons also adjusted Sundeep’s upper lip, which was pressed closely against her nose.
Over the next year, Sundeep is scheduled for further facial surgery, and if all goes well, she plans to marry her fiancé, Amritpal Singh Rupra (the wedding was originally scheduled for April 2005). Currently, her family is offering a reward of nearly $2,000 for information regarding the perpetrators of the acid attack.
