The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and the Central Hydro-Meteorological Institute have collaborated to implement an urgent investment project for the flood warning system in Northern Vietnam, Phase I. This initiative covers provinces from the northern mountainous regions to Ha Tinh, based on data collected from existing local observation and warning equipment at observation stations.
In 2006, the project will install new automatic rain measuring devices, combined with rainfall estimates from radar systems at observation stations, to create an effective flash flood forecasting process.
The flood prevention program aims to develop a comprehensive and detailed plan for flash flood prevention across mountainous provinces nationwide. This includes research to establish criteria for identifying areas at risk of flash floods and conducting surveys to collect data on residential areas that may be directly affected by such floods.
The program will also establish a flash flood warning system and organize the placement of warning signs in these areas to raise public awareness for proactive prevention. Additionally, plans will be made for the relocation of households living in high-risk zones to safer areas.
This project is part of the “Enhancing Early and Accurate Forecasting of Storms and Floods” initiative, with a total investment capital of 256 billion VND, expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
