Ancient people believed that during the Year of the Dragon, there were often fierce storms and accompanying floods. In recent history, the most devastating events were the two storms and floods in 1904 and 1964.
The Southern Region is known as a fertile land, rarely affected by storms and floods, but in the Year of the Wood Dragon (Giáp Thìn) 1904, a terrifying storm struck the Gò Công region, which is commonly referred to by locals as “The Year of the Dragon Floods”. On May 1, 1904, equivalent to the 16th day of the 3rd lunar month of Giáp Thìn, the eye of the storm made landfall along the Gò Công coastline, but the destruction extended from Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu all the way to Rạch Giá and Cà Mau.
“Suddenly a storm in the calm/ Flood waters of the dragon year meet the dragon month/ Winds blow, trees bend, birds are terrified/ The flat land rises in waves, they are horrified…” These lines were published in the Nông Cổ Mín Đàm newspaper on June 9, 1904.
Report on the storm in the Year of the Dragon 1904 in Nam Kỳ Tuần newspaper, final issue dated June 8, 1944.
