Police officers tasked with hostage rescue and other dangerous missions now have a powerful new tool at their disposal: a spherical camera that can be thrown from a distance, bounce on the ground, record video and audio, and transmit data for up to 2 hours.
The EyeBall camera weighs approximately 0.4 kg and is protected by a durable rubber casing and polyurethane plastic, a synthetic material used for paint. This design allows it to be thrown through windows or bounce off walls. Once it reaches its destination, it self-stabilizes and begins recording and transmitting audio and video up to a distance of 183 meters.
Other remote monitoring methods for video and audio during dangerous operations often require getting close to the target, which can be quite risky and potentially deadly.
The EyeBall is an invention by an Israeli company, ODF Optronics. This device has been sold to the military, the Israeli intelligence agency, and customers in Asia and Europe.
Police departments can spend $4,800 to purchase two EyeBall cameras, which can be recharged after 2 hours of use, comparable to traditional surveillance equipment.
