According to information from the Animal Health Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) on November 20, the avian influenza outbreak has been controlled in Hanoi (25 days without new outbreaks) and Bac Lieu (48 days without new outbreaks).
Along with this announcement, the number of localities affected by avian influenza has decreased to 15 provinces and cities, with 122 communes and wards across 61 districts and towns. However, in two communes of Thanh Ha and Tu Ky districts (Hai Duong), as well as four communes in Hau Loc and Quang Xuong districts (Thanh Hoa), new outbreak points continue to emerge.
* On the same day, the Prime Minister issued an urgent dispatch to all levels and sectors. In the dispatch, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to urgently complete vaccination for the entire existing poultry population and develop a specific plan for poultry vaccination in 2006. He also called for strict monitoring of the disease and a prohibition on the transportation of poultry and poultry products that have not undergone quarantine. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of immediately considering support for households with poultry that have been culled.
* In the afternoon of November 20, 2005, during a meeting with the Ho Chi Minh City Steering Committee for Avian Influenza Prevention, Deputy Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan directed districts to intensify efforts so that by November 26, the city would no longer have any poultry farming. Regarding the issue of stray pigeons, Mr. Nhan requested the veterinary department to propose an effective capture plan soon. For households raising ornamental birds, local authorities are urged to encourage residents to cull or remove them from the city, with a deadline set for the end of November 30.
