At the seminar titled “Automobile Emissions and Environmental Issues” held this morning on March 21, Mr. Trần Bá Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Industry), explained why Vietnam only applies Euro 2 emission standards instead of the stricter Euro 4 standards. He stated that this is due to Vietnam’s reliance on imported fuel standards and the current technology used in automobiles.
Currently, the fuel imported into Vietnam is of lower quality, and the technology applied to vehicles manufactured or assembled in Vietnam does not meet the requirements for higher emission standards than Euro 2.
Meanwhile, Mr. Quản Thắng, Deputy General Director of Toyota Vietnam, noted that on National Highway 5 (Hanoi – Hai Phong), a vehicle not meeting Euro emission standards emits 0.5 kg of harmful gases into the environment, and every 2,000 vehicles contribute to 2 tons of toxic emissions.
According to regulations, from July 1, 2007, all motor vehicles (cars, motorcycles) produced, assembled, or imported must comply with emission standards equivalent to Euro 2.
With this regulation, Mr. Cao Xuân Vịnh, Head of the Environmental Department (Registration Department), mentioned that while Euro 2 standards will be applied for now, there is a possibility of “skipping stages” in the future, bypassing Euro 3 standards to implement Euro 4 standards directly.
