The vampire squid poses no danger to humans.
Despite its fearsome name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, the vampire squid is not dangerous to humans. They are widely distributed throughout the ocean, yet scientists know very little about them. When first discovered in 1903, they were mistakenly identified as octopuses. They are called vampire squids due to their red eyes and the webbing between their tentacles. Vampire squids require very little oxygen, allowing them to thrive in low-oxygen environments.
At first glance, one might mistake the vampire squid for a creature out of a science fiction movie, as their bodies can invert from the outside in. They have a pair of fins at the top of their bodies that resemble ears and serve as their means of propulsion through the water.
