Millions of men worldwide have low sperm counts, limiting their reproductive capabilities |
The “smart” test, called Fertell, is specifically designed to determine fertility potential. It can detect potential reproductive issues with an accuracy of up to 95%. Fertell is now available over-the-counter in the UK.
Professor Chris Barratt from the University of Birmingham (UK), the creator of Fertell, tested the product on 150 men, with 95% of participants receiving accurate results. “Age significantly impacts fertility, so having reliable information early on is a distinct advantage,” Barratt noted.
Using Fertell is straightforward; all that is required is a small sample of semen and activating the device. In less than 60 minutes, the device will indicate whether the sperm count is sufficient to fertilize an egg.
Fertell operates on the principle of forcing sperm to swim through a barrier that simulates the cervix of a woman. It calculates the number of sperm capable of passing through. If the number of active sperm meets the necessary minimum, the test will display a red line as a warning.
To successfully develop this test kit, the research team meticulously analyzed over 3,000 sperm samples. According to experts, Fertell promises a bright future, as it helps men alleviate the confusion and inconvenience of visiting a hospital.
