Modern obstetricians consider children born before 37 weeks of gestation to be premature. In a study conducted by the London Psychiatric Institute, participants included young men and women aged 18 and 19 who were born between 1979 and 1981. Out of the 108 participants who were born before 33 weeks of gestation, 67 were born at term.
Comparative analysis revealed that premature youths often exhibited higher levels of anxiety, were more withdrawn than their full-term peers, and were also less active, had limited social interactions, and faced greater challenges in adapting to society.
Scientists have yet to identify the exact cause of these conditions, but they hypothesize that infections in premature infants may affect brain development. Additionally, being placed in incubators and temporarily separated from their mothers could have an impact. However, they do not rule out the potential influence of genetic factors from the mother.
