Baby Jie-jie, who is 59 days old, was born in Shanghai Hospital with a congenital condition of three arms.
Dr. Chen Bochang, Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, stated that examinations have revealed that both left arms do not function as a typical arm. As of now, it has not been established which arm has developed more significantly.
Chen stated: “This case is truly extraordinary. We have never encountered a case with a fully formed third arm like this. It presents a challenging decision for us in determining which arm to operate on.”
Additionally, according to local media reports, the baby also has only one kidney. Doctors believe this may be the cause of his spinal deformity.
Notably, when the two left arms are brought together, the baby cries, but he laughs when touched in other areas.
The doctors at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center are advancing plans for surgery for the infant. However, due to his young age, this presents a significant challenge for the medical team.
Mr. Chen remarked: “We will consult with multiple experts, and we will soon determine a surgical method for the child.”
Previously, there have been a few cases in China of children born with an additional leg or arm. However, in all those cases, specialists were able to clearly identify which arm or leg had developed more fully.
The Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, under Dr. Chen Bochang’s leadership, is one of the most experienced hospitals in performing orthopedic surgeries for unusual congenital defects in newborns, including cases of conjoined twins. From the wealthiest areas of Shanghai to the impoverished rural regions of Anhui Province, many cases of deformities like that of Jie-jie have been brought here.
