Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of carp, described as a unique species endemic to the city of Huizhou in Guangdong Province, southern China, residing upstream in the rivers of the Zhujiang River Basin.
Researchers indicate this fish species is scientifically named Opsariichthys rubriventris. (Source: Xinhua).
In a paper published in the international journal Diversity, researchers stated that this fish species is scientifically named Opsariichthys rubriventris, distinguished by several characteristics, such as having 13 to 14 scales before the dorsal fin, a lower jaw protruding outward beyond the upper jaw, and cheeks with two rows of vertical tubercles.
Furthermore, mature males exhibit bright orange-red coloration on their lower jaws, bellies, pectoral fins, and the front edge of their anal fins.
Co-author of the paper, Mr. Zhou Jiajun, noted that this discovery is significant for understanding the evolutionary process of the genus Opsariichthys and for protecting fish diversity in the tributaries of the Zhujiang River.
According to the expert, this fish species has a narrow distribution range and a small population size. With its vibrant colors and high ornamental value, it is highly sought after in the ornamental fish trade.
However, in the context of overfishing affecting their habitat, this fish species requires more attention and protection.
