On November 16, China announced that it will conduct a new measurement of the Great Wall using modern technology to more accurately determine the length and shape of this world-famous cultural heritage.
The China Great Wall Institute, the authority responsible for the research and management of this heritage site, stated that a comprehensive survey project utilizing aerial remote sensing technology is in the feasibility study phase. This initiative aims to re-measure the Great Wall and provide images of its shape and overall layout. The project will also aid in the conservation efforts of the Great Wall, which has sections that are deteriorating due to natural and human impacts.
Currently, the Great Wall is identified to have a total length of 7,300 kilometers. The construction of this monumental structure began during the reign of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor to unify China (in 246 BC), and it was later rebuilt and expanded primarily during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
