The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has announced that China will take measures to eliminate the embezzlement of funds allocated for scientific research.
This phenomenon currently poses a threat to scientific research in China.
According to a recent report from Chinanews, Chinese scientific leaders are beginning to express their frustration over corruption in scientific research within the country.
Mr. Lu Yongxiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the highest scientific research organization in China, asserted that CAS has always opposed the actions of “research leaders,” referring to those in authoritative positions at research institutions who misappropriate research funds through unethical means. These individuals have severely violated ethical standards and scientific laws.
According to Mr. Lu, the reason these “research leaders” can pocket research funding is that the authority to review and approve research grant applications is concentrated in certain departments, and this process lacks transparency.
Mr. Lu further noted that most of these “research leaders” view their students as mere “employees.”
Instead of nurturing their students’ potential in research, they exploit them to complete their own research projects, which harms the students’ learning process.
The CAS President emphasized the need to penalize these “research leaders” under the law once the truth is uncovered. He pointed out that China should make the management of scientific research more democratic and transparent while enhancing external oversight to put an end to this issue.
