Chinese scientists have recently announced the successful cloning of a cow with genes resistant to bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease.
The 55 kg calf was born in Shandong province, three years after the disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk from South Korea successfully cloned cows with a protein structure resistant to mad cow disease.
“Scientists at the Laiyang Agricultural Science Institute in Shandong reported that they used gene transfer technology to insert these important genes into a calf cloned from a mature cow cell“, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Further tests will aim to assess whether the calf develops stably and maintains the effectiveness of the implanted genes.
