China has successfully cloned two Tibetan goats using somatic cells from adult goats, helping to prevent the degeneration of this highland livestock breed.
According to “China Daily,” this milestone marks an important step in preserving the Tibetan goat breed, which plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem.
The cloning program for Tibetan goats was carried out by a research team from Northwest A&F University in Qinghai Province, China, utilizing cells from three male and one female donated goats. The first Tibetan goat born from this cloning program weighed 3.4 kg and has a good physique, showing great potential to adapt well to the local environment.
The team responsible for the program emphasized the role of cloning technology in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of preserving the Tibetan goat breed, which is a primary source of income for local pastoral households. Through cloning research, scientists aim to promote the growth of Tibetan goat herds, ultimately increasing income for farmers and herders in the region.
