Ming Yang Smart Energy Technology Company recently unveiled the largest wind turbine in the world. This giant offshore machine features blades longer than 140 meters, which, when spinning, sweep through an area larger than nine football fields.
The Chinese wind turbine manufacturer stated in a press release that the turbine has a maximum capacity of 18 megawatts, generating enough electricity annually to supply power for 96,000 people.
Ming Yang announced that they will use the world’s largest turbine to replace smaller models, thereby reducing the number of turbines needed for a specific project, which in turn helps lower costs. Additionally, with the improvements made in its design, this wind turbine is lighter, reducing the pressure involved in constructing foundations, thus minimizing materials and logistical requirements.
This announcement comes after the China State Shipbuilding Corporation revealed its new turbine, which set a record. Their design also has a capacity of 18 megawatts but features slightly smaller blades.
Ming Yang had also unveiled its first 16-megawatt turbine on January 10. This turbine previously set a record when it was first announced in August 2021.
China is the largest wind energy market in the world. Manufacturers in the country have capitalized on strong demand to build larger and better plants. They are now able to compete with European and American rivals such as Vestas Wind Systems A/S and General Electric Co.
