The new project will be tested in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China. The speed of this maglev train will be double that of the fastest train currently in operation, the Shanghai Maglev Train, which has a maximum speed of 460 km/h. World Artery, the Chinese company involved in bringing this vehicle to fruition, stated that the trial project will help boost local tourism.
The ultra-high-speed train uses magnetic levitation technology, allowing the train to hover and travel at extremely high speeds, propelled by powerful magnetic fields. Unlike traditional trains that rely on friction from wheels, maglev trains operate above the tracks, eliminating the need for friction. Currently, only China, Japan, and South Korea have operational trains of this kind.
The new project utilizes low-pressure vacuum tube technology. This is the most crucial aspect of the program, enabling the train to achieve high speeds at affordable costs without compromising safety. Zheng Bin, the president of World Artery, expressed that constructing the test track will be a breakthrough in the field and a significant technological advancement in turning concepts into reality.
Exceeding speeds of 1,000 km/h will create numerous challenges that could impact passenger safety and infrastructure integrity. Issues such as maintaining low vacuum conditions in the tube and passengers facing high speeds and rapid acceleration need to be addressed. Additionally, the costs associated with developing and implementing the maglev system require careful consideration. Constructing the maglev tracks, stations, and related infrastructure will also demand significant investment.
According to the Global Times, the low-pressure vacuum tube and related manufacturing facilities will be built under a cooperation agreement between World Artery and the Harbin Industrial Investment Group. World Artery will be responsible for the construction technology and related patents, while the partner company will handle the construction permits and provide services such as investment consulting.
