Xinhua News Agency recently reported that among the top 10 most popular online games in China in 2005, five were developed entirely by Chinese companies, featuring characters that embody 100% Chinese identity.
This statistical report was unveiled at the “China Computer Game Industry Seminar” held in Xiamen over the weekend. The Chinese video game industry proudly claims a 60% share of the domestic online gaming market and has successfully exported 10 online game titles across Asia and Western Europe.
The online gaming industry in China has grown almost from scratch over the past few years, during which foreign online games dominated the market. However, in the last three years, China’s online gaming industry has truly captured the domestic market with numerous titles that have won the hearts of players.
In 2005, Chinese gaming companies successfully developed 192 different online game titles, marking a 76% increase compared to 2004. The total number of developers specializing in online game design in China has reached 12,600, tripling the figure from 2004.
Kou Xiaowei, Director of the Chinese National Publishing and Press Administration, stated at the seminar: “The continuous innovation and the strong cultural characteristics of China are the primary factors that enable Chinese online games to compete effectively in the global market“.
