On April 19, 2006, the family of Mr. Nguyễn Hữu Duyệt in Thon 3, Krông Zin Commune (M’Drắk District, Dak Lak) purchased a bunch of squid tentacles from the market for lunch.
His son, Nguyễn Quốc Tuấn, took a piece of food cut into slices from the squid tentacles.
When he put it in his mouth and chewed, Tuấn felt very uncomfortable and immediately spat it out. Shortly after, his mouth, tongue, and throat became swollen. He developed a high fever, extreme drowsiness, and complete numbness.
Realizing that his son had been poisoned by consuming seafood containing dangerous toxins, on the evening of April 19, 2006, the family rushed Tuấn to the M’Drắk District hospital for emergency treatment.
After the incident, the family was shocked and worried, not understanding whether the seafood was indeed poisonous. While Tuấn’s health was still critically poor, Mr. Duyệt decided to taste the piece of food himself, then spat it out to “know more” about how dangerous this strange squid tentacle was. Immediately after, Mr. Duyệt suffered from swelling in his mouth and throat, a stiff tongue, numbness, body aches, and drowsiness.
In light of the recent food poisoning case, preliminary assessments by specialists suggest that Mr. Duyệt and his son may have consumed a green octopus tentacle from the Central Coast. This is a type of animal that closely resembles squid but has a green color.
Previously, there have been several cases of coastal residents getting poisoned and dying after consuming green octopus. This is crucial information for consumers, emphasizing the need to be cautious when using seafood and to avoid products that may contain dangerous toxins.
