While print newspapers are struggling to retain readers, online news platforms are experiencing double-digit growth.
The number of regular online news readers in January increased by 21% compared to December 2005. During this period, the number of visitors accessing news websites reached a record increase of 43%.
According to statistics from the American Press Association, in November 2005, there were 55 million users—approximately 1 in 3 Internet users—who regularly visited an online news site.
Additionally, the number of young people frequently visiting websites also saw a significant rise. Specifically, by the end of 2005, the number of individuals aged 25-34 visiting websites increased by 14%, while those aged 18-24 experienced a growth of only 9%.
These figures are extracted from the 2006 Press Reader Database recently released by the American Press Association.
“This database once again highlights the tremendous achievements the journalism industry has made and continues to make, emphasizing the strength of digital news. Thanks to the Internet, journalism has reached a broader audience,” asserted the President of the American Press Association.
