This is an international competition open to all high school students, undergraduate engineering students, and recent graduates from the United Kingdom, APEC member countries, and other nations in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since 2001, the IDEERS competition has been held annually by the British Council Taiwan, the University of Bristol (United Kingdom), and Taiwan’s National Center for Research on Earthquakes.
To participate, students must form a team of four members and may invite a teacher to accompany them. Contestants will design and build a model of an earthquake-resistant house using materials provided by the organizers.
For more detailed information, including the competition rules and regulations, examples of previously constructed earthquake-resistant house models, planning methodologies, and reference knowledge about building earthquake-resistant houses, please visit the websites http://w3.ncree.org/ideers/2006, www.britishcouncil.org/taiwan, and www.ideers.bris.ac.uk.
The purpose of IDEERS is to spark interest and passion for scientific research among youth, to help students learn teamwork skills, and to provide opportunities for networking, exchanging experiences, and meeting peers from various countries around the world.
The prizes for the competition include a first prize of NT$30,000, a second prize of NT$20,000, a third prize of NT$10,000, and several encouragement awards.
For foreign participants, the British Council Taiwan will cover the full costs of accommodation, meals, and transportation for the team in Taiwan, which includes five days of hotel accommodation, transportation costs within Taiwan, and airport transfers. Participating teams will be responsible for their round-trip airfare.
