Every year, egg producers cull 7 million one-day-old male chicks because they are not commercially viable for egg or meat production.

In response to this situation, a research lab in Israel has developed a new technology that can screen chicken eggs for male and female embryos right from the start to prevent the current “genocide” of male chicks.
Scientist Yuval Cinnamon stated that his team has created a genetic trait related to sex that prevents the development of male embryos in freshly laid eggs. Specifically, researchers will use blue light to activate the genetic trait in eggs containing male embryos, causing them not to develop, while eggs with female embryos lack this genetic trait and are not affected, remaining entirely non-GMO. As a result, male embryo eggs do not develop and hatch into chicks; instead, they can be used as animal feed.
Yaarit Wainberg, CEO of Poultry by Huminn, the company licensed to commercialize this research, expressed his desire to disseminate this gender classification technology to the global egg-laying poultry industry. He mentioned that negotiations are underway with genetic companies to bring this solution to market within the next two years. He believes this solution will help address a major issue for the egg poultry industry.
