The diamond has been named “Lulo Rose”, as announced in a statement by Lucapa Diamond Company and its partners, Endiama EP and Rosas & Petalas, on July 27.
This diamond will be sold through an international auction organized by Angola’s state diamond trading company, Sodiam.
Colored diamonds, which are rarer than white diamonds, have reached record prices in recent years.
Recently, the largest blue diamond in history, the De Beers Cullinan Blue, was auctioned in Hong Kong and sold for $57.5 million in April.
Pink diamonds are the rarest gemstones and the most sought after in the global market. The world record for the value of pink diamonds has been tracked since 2017, when the CTF Star Pink diamond weighing 59.6 carats was sold for $71.2 million in Hong Kong.
According to Sotheby’s, up to 5 of the 10 most expensive diamonds ever traded globally are pink diamonds.
Australia’s Lucapa Diamond Company owns 40% of the Lulo diamond mine. Since mining began in 2010, the Lulo mine has become famous for its rare and high-quality diamonds. Notably, the largest diamond ever found in Angola in 2016 weighed 404.2 carats.
