These customs may sound terrifying, but they create a sense of familiarity and serve as a reason to bring people closer to friends, family, and the entire community.
Quirky Customs Around the World
Hair Freezing Contest
The Hair Freezing Contest at the Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs is an annual event that anyone can participate in.
First, contestants jump into the hot springs when the outdoor temperature drops to minus 20 degrees Celsius. They wet their heads in the hot water and then expose their heads outside until all hair, fur, and beards freeze solid. Once the hair is completely frozen, the contestants ring a bell placed next to the pool, and staff will come over to take pictures.

Newlyweds Avoid Using the Bathroom for Three Days
The Tidong community in Indonesia prohibits newlyweds from using the bathroom for three days after their wedding. It is believed that holding in their bathroom needs brings good luck to the couple, ensuring their happiness for many years to come. If this rule is broken, it is thought that their good fortune will be short-lived.
During these three days, a designated person is responsible for watching over the newlyweds. They provide the bride and groom with small amounts of food and drink to limit their need to use the bathroom. The watcher must ensure that the couple does not attempt to “relieve themselves” in secret.
Cinnamon Bath for Singles
Turning 25 and still single is a rather uncomfortable moment for Danes. On this birthday, a person will be doused with water by friends and then sprinkled with cinnamon all over their body. It is believed that the water helps the cinnamon stick better.
This is a humorous water punishment for singles and a playful way for friends to tease each other.
Currently, in Denmark, the average marriage age is 34, but some still practice this tradition for fun.
Banquet for Monkeys
On the last Sunday of November each year, a lavish buffet is prepared for monkeys to enjoy.
The ceremony begins with a performance by people dressed as monkeys, followed by the arrival of the monkeys. The table is filled with various fruits and vegetables for the animals to choose from freely.
The people of Thailand hold monkeys in high regard and believe that these animals bring them good luck.

Breaking Items in Front of the Bride’s House
About a week before a couple gets married, friends, family, and most people can come to the bride’s parents’ house to throw items. People usually toss things they no longer need, such as plates or porcelain. However, glass or mirrors are not allowed to be thrown as they are believed to bring bad luck.
After this part ends, the engaged couple must clean up the broken pieces together. It is important that they clean up as a sign that throughout their lives, they will face and resolve problems together.
