The recent dangerous hailstorm in Texas has resulted in large hailstones falling to the ground, causing damage to several vehicles.
The state of Texas is currently facing severe weather conditions. Storms and tornadoes have struck Texas for the second time this May. Recently, weather reporters in the Texas Panhandle discovered a gigantic hailstone measuring larger than an adult’s hand.
The gigantic hailstone recently found in Texas, USA.
It measures 17.78cm.
The hailstone was discovered by two reporters, Val and Amy Castor, both veteran “storm chasers” for Oklahoma City’s KWTV. They found the gigantic hailstone on a road near Vigo Park on Sunday, June 2, while covering a severe storm in Texas. Reportedly, the hailstone measures nearly 18cm, equivalent to a pineapple.
Castor stated that with over 30 years of storm chasing experience, he has never seen a hailstone this large, and the hailstorm on June 2 was the biggest he has ever encountered. Before finding the gigantic hailstone by the roadside, Castor had also seen smaller hailstones, about the size of a baseball, fall in front of his car’s windshield, one of which shattered the windshield.
Jordan Salem, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Lubbock, Texas, noted that the hailstone discovered on June 2 surpassed a previous record of a 16.25cm hailstone found in 2021 in Hondo, Texas. The largest hailstone ever recorded in the U.S. measured 27.94cm and weighed 907g. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the largest hailstone in the country was found in Vivian, South Dakota, in July 2010. Currently, Salem is awaiting confirmation from Texas climate researchers to validate this record.
This gigantic hailstone is still smaller than those recorded in the U.S. in 2010.
Hail is a form of precipitation that falls as ice pellets of various sizes. Hail forms within updrafts of thunderstorms. Unlike snow, hail typically occurs in the summer, during thunderstorms, when the temperature aloft is colder than at the surface. Depending on the severity, hail can cause damage to property, livestock, and people.
