Yesterday (February 8), Mr. Nguyễn Tấn Hiệp, Director of Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park in Quảng Bình, announced that a new species of reptile has been discovered for the first time in the world in the Karst mountains of the Chà Nòi region of the national park.
This newly identified species is known as the ear lizard, scientifically named Tripidophrus Nogeler. It resides on cliff faces near streams or hides under rocks along water crevices.
According to German scientist Thomas Zegler, there are currently 25 species of ear lizards recognized worldwide. Most of these species are found primarily on the mainland and islands of Southeast Asia, with 7 species currently inhabiting Vietnam. The ear lizard species Tripidophrus Nogeler marks the 26th known species of ear lizards globally.
