While there has been no definitive answer, Tristan Glasson received numerous comments comparing the creature he discovered to a character from the famous film Alice in Wonderland.
Experts are not even sure what the creature actually is; they suggest that blue may not be its natural color.

Nathan Lo, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Sydney, believes that this species may be a type of dung beetle larva, as the adult has a body that is more than just blue. However, he did not provide a specific answer.
Some opinions suggest that the strange creature resembles a caterpillar, with average caterpillar lengths varying between species from as small as 1mm to about 14cm.
There are caterpillar species that are blue, such as the blue-horned caterpillar, but Professor Nathan Lo believes this is not one of them.
“I’m not sure about this species and whether it originates from Australia. It appears blue due to an infection of Iridovirus. The structure of the virus causes crystals to form inside the insect, leading to the blue appearance. But I have never seen such a blue creature in real life. This is an interesting and particularly rare discovery in nature,” said Professor Nathan Lo.
