The Schmidt Ocean submarine is exploring the “Lost City” beneath the depths of the Atlantic Ocean when it discovered a strange creature.
The giant squid was spotted during the 501st dive of the expedition and was streamed live on YouTube.
They have an alien-like appearance with long, bizarre tentacles.
This mysterious creature has a translucent pinkish body with deep purple eyes. It was observed at a depth of over 1,930 meters, gracefully swimming in the pitch-black water.
The creature may be over 6 meters long, with most of its length attributed to its extremely long and thin tentacles.
According to Schmidt Ocean, it is unclear how giant squids use their arms and tentacles, but many ultra-small suckers were found on them.
Scientists believe they use these tentacles to trap and hunt prey.
The giant squid belongs to the genus Magnapinna, which is divided into several different species. The squids discovered are found in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, indicating they may have a wide distribution across global seas.
Hydrothermal vent systems are known to be habitats for unique living organisms. Just a few weeks prior, the expedition captured images of numerous shrimp in the area. However, the discovery of the giant squid is a remarkable find.
Only about 20 encounters with giant squids have been recorded since they were first discovered around 20 years ago. Encounters with giant squids are quite rare, so scientists do not know much about their behavior.
