Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci – VRE |
The compound, named MMA or 7-O-malonyl-macrolactin, brings hope in the battle against bacteria resistant to what are termed “last-resort” drugs, as reported by AlphaGalileo.
This new antibiotic was discovered by scientists at the German Center for Biological Engineering (GBF) in Braunschweig, derived from a new strain of soil bacteria called Bacillus subtilis.
MMA not only inhibits the well-known methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) but also vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), both of which are responsible for infections in hospitalized patients. Additionally, MMA prevents bacterial cell division, making it impossible for them to reproduce.
