Five individuals of the white pheasant and golden-breasted pheasant, both classified as endangered and rare species, have been discovered in the Pù Hu Special Use Forest (Thanh Hoá).
The management board of the Pù Hu Nature Reserve (Thanh Hoá) is implementing a project to investigate, assess the current status, and conserve endangered and rare pheasant species in the Pù Hu Nature Reserve, including the white pheasant and golden-breasted pheasant.
This project contributes to the stable maintenance and development of rare pheasant species, ensuring long-term genetic conservation. Additionally, it helps local communities enhance their responsibilities in biodiversity conservation and the protection of wildlife.
To date, this unit has identified five individuals of white pheasants and golden-breasted pheasants in compartment 56 of the Pù Hu Special Use Forest.
White Pheasant.
According to the management board of the Pù Hu Nature Reserve, there are 20 species of pheasants (scientific name: Phasianidae) in Vietnam. Among these, 11 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book, and 7 species are included in the World Red Data Book.
Golden-breasted Pheasant.
The golden-breasted pheasant (scientific name: Polyplectron bicalcaratum) is the rarest species among the pheasants recorded in the Pù Hu Nature Reserve. It is listed in both the Vietnam Red Data Book and the international Red Data Book.

In Thanh Hoá, golden-breasted pheasants have been spotted in the Pù Hu Nature Reserve, in areas far from human habitation, with populations ranging from three to four individuals per group.
