Drinking about half a liter of beer daily may prevent osteoporosis, and it may even be more effective in preventing bone loss than calcium, scientists say.

In a study conducted on 3 million people in the UK with osteoporosis, British scientists discovered that ethanol in beer can inhibit hormones that lead to bone loss.
They monitored a group of healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 50. After having these individuals consume several types of beer at an average dosage of about 0.433 liters per person, they found that over a period of about 6 hours, the ethanol in the beer inhibited various hormones that contribute to weakening bones.
Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, making them more susceptible to fractures. It commonly affects bones throughout the body, but primarily causes fractures in the wrist, spine, and hips.
Professor Jonathan Powell, the lead researcher, stated: “This is a very interesting finding. Everyone knows that calcium prevents bone loss, but we found that ethanol in beer has a similar effect, and even better.”
“Of course, moderation is key, and we know that excessive beer consumption can have negative effects,” Professor Powell added.
