Essentially, it can cause your body to produce more urine than normal due to increased blood flow to the kidneys. If you urinate more frequently, you will lose water—it’s as simple as that. Some studies indicate that caffeine has the strongest diuretic effect on individuals who do not regularly consume coffee but suddenly intake a large amount of caffeine.
How Much Caffeine is Considered Excessive?
In moderate portions, coffee does not actually cause dehydration. Even if you consume quite a bit of caffeine (up to 300mg), it is still unlikely to cause a significant diuretic effect. Essentially, while coffee can lead you to urinate more because it is a diuretic food, the amount of urine produced may not be enough to dehydrate your body. In fact, studies show that for caffeine to have a significant diuretic effect, a person needs to consume more than 500mg of caffeine per day—equivalent to about 5 cups or 1.2 liters of brewed coffee.
This means you don’t need to give up your morning coffee habit for this reason. Staying hydrated is still an important part of overall health, but you don’t have to abandon your routine of enjoying 1 or 2 cups of coffee each day out of concern for dehydration. As long as you consume caffeine in moderation, there’s nothing to worry about.
To recognize signs of dehydration, you can observe the color of your urine. The darker the urine, the more dehydrated your body is. At this point, you need to replenish your body with water, and it’s just that simple.
