A strong earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the border between Myanmar and China, causing several buildings in Hanoi to shake lightly.
At around 8:50 AM this morning, November 17, some residents reported feeling a slight tremor in Hanoi.
Many residents living in high-rise buildings in Hanoi clearly felt the shaking.
In the Cat Linh area (Dong Da), Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long reported that while he was working, he suddenly felt the floor of the building shake lightly, which made him feel dizzy. However, this sensation quickly passed.
Meanwhile, Ms. Dang Thuong, residing in Dinh Cong, also confirmed that she felt her desk and chairs shaking at her workplace, which caused her and several others to feel slightly disoriented.

According to information from the Earth Physics Institute, at 1:37:16 AM (GMT) today, which is 8:37:16 AM (Hanoi time), an earthquake measuring 5.4 occurred at coordinates (21.21° N, 99.46° E), with a focal depth of approximately 48 km. The earthquake occurred in the border area between Myanmar and China. The risk level for this natural disaster is classified as level 0.
Confirming with reporters at 9 AM, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earth Physics Institute, initially stated: It is highly likely that the shaking experienced by people in Hanoi this morning is due to the impact of this earthquake.
The Earth Physics Institute is continuing to monitor information regarding the aforementioned earthquake.
Previously, Hanoi had recorded light tremors due to the influence of earthquakes in neighboring areas. The most recent was in December 2021, when an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale occurred at coordinates (22.391° N, 101.811° E), with a focal depth of about 8.6 km. This earthquake occurred in Phongsaly province, Laos (approximately 34 km from Muong Nhe district). This earthquake also caused shaking in some areas of Hanoi.
