A pod of whales unexpectedly approached two paddleboarders, seemingly wanting to play with them off the coast of Monte Hermoso on August 16.

During a vacation at Monte Hermoso Beach, located about 630 km from Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires, two friends, Valentín Villalba (45) and Diego Schulz (46), had an “unforgettable” experience with whales while enjoying their favorite sport of paddleboarding.
Speaking to local media, the two men reported that they were surrounded by 12 whales for nearly an hour, but it was unclear which species they belonged to.
“It was an overwhelming feeling of happiness. We were not afraid at all,” Valentín emphasized. “The whales seemed to accept us as part of their group and took turns approaching us as if they wanted to play.”

In the recorded video, a playful whale can be seen lifting its head above the water right next to the board, then diving down and gently flicking its tail, knocking Valentín off balance.
The presence of whales swimming near Monte Hermoso is an annual event. During migration season, they move south to breed and raise their young, but sightings close to shore and interactions with humans are very rare.
“I believe this area – located in a natural bay – is used by the whales to rest during their journey southward,” Valentín added.
