Your appearance, skills, and abilities are largely determined by your genes. Recent research suggests that even your emotional state is inherited from your parents.
A new study reveals that genetics play a role of 33% in how you perceive your physical health, and 36% in your mental and emotional state.
“Attitudes and perceptions have both a genetic and an environmental component,” said James Romeis, a professor at Saint Louis University in France and the lead researcher of the study. “The quality of physical life is our perception of health and how we believe illness impacts our ability to function. It is influenced by our genes more than we realize.”
Romeis and his team surveyed nearly 3,000 middle-aged, middle-class twins regarding their physical activity, physical limitations, overall health, social interactions, emotional constraints, and mental health. They compared information between identical and fraternal twins.
“This is not just a simple attitude; it is deeply rooted in the soul—both psychologically and physiologically.”
The findings help explain why some individuals readily consult doctors about health issues, while others resist following medical advice regarding prescriptions, diet, or exercise.
