The European Union (EU) has recently launched the DAMOCLES project to accurately investigate the causes of melting ice in the Arctic.
Every year, Arctic sea ice decreases by approximately 37,000 square kilometers. On average, the thickness of the ice has reduced from 3.1 meters to just 1.8 meters.
The DAMOCLES project (Development of Arctic Modelling and Observing Capabilities for Long-term Environmental Studies) was established with the participation of 100 experts from 45 research institutions across Europe to conduct long-term observations of changes in Arctic sea ice and to understand the consequences of climate change causing ice melt.
Nothol, an environmental expert from the Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen, Germany, stated that the Arctic reacts very sensitively to global warming compared to other regions of the Earth.
