The European Space Agency (ESA) has invited a renowned French chef to design a menu for European astronauts. That chef is Alain Ducasse (photo).
Alain Ducasse is already a well-known figure in his culinary career. However, he is now ready to conquer a new frontier: space cuisine. At the request of the ESA, these dishes need to not only enhance the physical health of astronauts but also boost their spirits, helping to keep them cheerful and refreshed during long missions, such as a potential journey to Mars, which could last around 1,000 days!
According to the ESA, it is impossible to survive on bread alone, which is why a concentrated tomato sauce paired with rice pudding and beans cannot be overlooked. Culinary researchers are focusing on eight or nine main ingredients, including onions, tomatoes, rice, lettuce, and spinach, which will be included in the food sent to space and stored in reserves on board for the long journey.
Alain Ducasse has been awarded multiple “stars” by the prestigious Michelin food guide, considered the highest honor for chefs.
