Garret Wing, a renowned dog training expert, sparked a stir on social media when he revealed his reasons for not wanting to own three specific dog breeds.
3 Dog Breeds That Expert Garret Wing Refuses to Own
According to the Mirror, recently, Garret Wing, founder of the American Standard Dog Training center, shared his thoughts on three dog breeds that he, as a seasoned expert, would avoid owning. His comments in a YouTube video quickly gained attention and sparked lively debate.
With over 20 years of experience in dog training worldwide, the reasons provided by Garret Wing surprised many. His impressive background includes training service dogs for police, bomb detection dogs, and handling serious attack cases.

He stated that the first breed he would never own is the Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Alabai). This breed can weigh over 77kg when fully grown and is typically used to guard livestock. “The problem is, I don’t have any livestock,” the dog training expert humorously shared.

The second breed on Garret Wing’s list is the Bloodhound. This breed can weigh up to 50kg. However, his concern isn’t about their size but rather their oily skin. He explains: “They have a very distinctive smell due to their oily skin. No matter how many times you bathe them, that odor is still very difficult to eliminate completely.”

The final breed mentioned by Garret Wing is the Chihuahua. The dog training expert humorously quipped: “If I needed a 1.4kg little demon from hell, with no purpose other than to sit on my lap and bite anything within a one-meter radius, I would choose a Chihuahua.”
Among the three breeds mentioned by Garret Wing, the Chihuahua is the most controversial. Many Chihuahua owners have come to the defense of their pets. One social media user commented: “My Chihuahua, Sparky, is the most well-behaved, sweet, and silly dog. Everyone loves him!” Another shared: “I’ve had a Chihuahua for 14 years. It’s the best little demon anyone could want.”
However, there are also many who agree with the dog training expert’s perspective. “That’s the most accurate description of the Chihuahua breed,” wrote another social media user.
Why Choosing the Right Dog Breed Matters?
Garret Wing’s comments come just a few months after the UK Prime Minister’s Office issued a ban on owning the Bully XL breed, amid a spike in dog attacks on people. The Bully XL is a large breed originating from the United States, with adult males standing 53 – 58 cm tall. They possess a very large, strong jaw and can weigh over 60kg.
According to statistics, the police in England and Wales reported 30,539 cases of dog attacks on people or guide dogs in 2023, a 21% increase from 25,291 cases in 2022.

Amid the debates, Jeanette Muldoon, a dog behavior expert at the Family Dog Club (UK), emphasized the importance of owning a dog that suits your lifestyle and personality. Dogs that do not have their needs met are more likely to rebel.
She further explained: “For example, Huskies generally do not like to be cuddled too much. This can be challenging for some people because they look so adorable. For some breeds, living in crowded areas can be stressful, such as herding breeds. They might struggle to cope with heavy traffic.”
Muldoon also offered advice for those considering dog ownership: “You should thoroughly research the breed you wish to own. Facebook groups dedicated to specific breeds can provide you with an overview of the issues that others have encountered when owning that breed.”
