Scientists Discover a Moon Larger than Earth’s Moon Orbiting an Asteroid
Astronomer Frank Marchis from the University of California and his team announced this groundbreaking discovery in this week’s issue of Nature magazine in London.
According to the scientists, they have discovered a second moon orbiting the asteroid 87 Sylvia, located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
These researchers indicated that this is the first time anyone has observed what is known as a three-body asteroid system.
The authors mentioned that last year they observed two moons orbiting the asteroid 87 Sylvia for a duration of two months. They found one moon in an orbit approximately 1,369 kilometers around the asteroid and a smaller second moon in an orbit around 710 kilometers.
