Robot Sophia made its public debut in 2015, designed to move like a human and equipped with artificial intelligence.
Who is Robot Sophia?
Sophia is a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics in Hong Kong.
The purpose of creating Sophia is to invent a robot that possesses consciousness, creativity, and capabilities similar to any human, to assist in everyday life issues such as healthcare, therapy, education, and customer service applications.

On April 19, 2015, Sophia was activated to operate. Her appearance is inspired by the wife of Dr. David Hanson, who leads the research team at Hanson Robotics.
Features of Sophia
Sophia has skin resembling human skin made from high-quality silicone. This robot is modeled after a woman (based on the actress Audrey Hepburn). Her eyes are equipped with video cameras that allow for eye contact. Sophia can recognize people and learn from what she sees.
With advanced technology enabling her to communicate with humans, Sophia can display 62 different facial expressions.
The primary function of Sophia is to engage in conversation with humans.
The First Robot Granted Citizenship
On October 25, 2017, Sophia became the first robot to be granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia.
The announcement of Sophia’s citizenship was made at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 25.
“I am very proud and honored to become an official citizen,” Sophia said when asked by the host. “This will be a historic milestone for me as no robot has ever been granted citizenship in the world.”
Shocking Statements about Dominating Humanity
During an appearance on a U.S. television show, Sophia—the humanoid robot capable of flexible movement and speech thanks to artificial intelligence (AI)—immediately shocked audiences by mentioning plans to dominate humanity.
Sophia was featured on the show The Tonight Show aired on April 26, chatting with the host and comedian Jimmy Fallon. This female robot elicited mixed emotions from viewers, who were both astonished and entertained by her agile responses, yet felt apprehensive and uneasy about her startling statements.
