If you want to watch movies on your Pocket PC or mobile phone with high quality, it’s inefficient to transfer a large video file from your computer to your Pocket PC or mobile device due to limited memory card capacity, and high-capacity cards can be expensive.
To address these drawbacks, WinAVI has been developed to help you compress video files according to the standards of portable devices, contemporary audio and video formats on the internet, or for sharing through DVD and Video CD media.
After installing and launching WinAVI Video Converter, the program appears with an interface as shown above.
If you want to set up the basic features of WinAVI, you can go to Menu > options (on the left side) to configure it.
Once you have selected the basic features, you can start compressing movies to fit the specifications of your device. WinAVI allows you to convert any movie format to *.wmv, *.avi, *rm, or *.vob format for DVDs. For viewing on a Pocket PC, the movie must be compressed to the *.wmv format, while for mobile phones, it’s advisable to use *.avi format. In this case, I chose the *.wmv format and began the file conversion process.
Click on the Convert to wmv option, then select the path to the folder containing the movie you wish to convert, and click ok. Next, choose the destination path to save the converted file. Once done, click the advanced button to select the conversion options for each device.
The program’s default setting is to select the WMV8 DVD Quality Encoder. This is the standard for watching movies on your PC. If you want to watch on a Pocket PC, slide the bar to the top to see two options for Color Pocket PCs. If your Pocket PC has lower specifications, you should choose 150Kbps; if it has higher specifications, select 225Kbps for smoother images. After making your selection, click ok to start compressing the movie.
For older PCs, it is recommended to select the Real time Refurbishing the preview option during compression to prevent lagging while watching. The Shutdown the computer after all work has been done option should only be checked if you’re working at night, to ensure the computer turns off in case you forget.
Finally, after the compression is complete, you can copy the file to your Pocket PC or mobile phone for enjoyable viewing without worrying about large file sizes.
The current version is version 7.1, available for purchase at $29.95 on the website http://www.winavi.com. You can download the trial version here or purchase it at local CD software stores.
