Microsoft has issued a final warning to users still operating on the outdated Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (ME) operating systems, which will no longer be supported as of July 11, 2006.
Microsoft had previously announced its intent to completely “discontinue” support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition starting July 11, 2006, allowing users and companies ample time to transition to newer Windows operating systems. After this date, Microsoft will not provide any support or take any responsibility for those who continue to use these once-popular operating systems.
Christopher Budd, a security management expert at Microsoft’s Security Center, stated that users of Windows 98, ME, and even Windows 2000 are currently facing numerous security threats due to the lack of updates and attention from Microsoft for these operating systems. Additionally, the number of users still relying on these outdated versions is quite low, making Microsoft’s decision to phase them out reasonable and justifiable.
At present, Windows 98 and ME users can still access the “Update” feature from Microsoft’s network, but once this feature is no longer available, it will signify the complete end of life for these operating systems. Furthermore, even Service Pack 1 for Windows XP will be abandoned by Microsoft starting October 10 of this year.
