The open-source browser trial version 2.0 is set to launch tomorrow, July 11. However, users can already begin downloading the preview software from the Mozilla FTP site.
One notable feature in Beta 1 is the spell-checking capability, which helps users avoid mistakes while writing blogs and posting on forums. Additionally, the new browser is equipped with an improved phishing protection tool. This filter (also present in Internet Explorer 7.0) will track pages deemed to contain harmful content and collaborate with Google’s “blacklist” to minimize risks users may encounter while browsing the web.
The interface of Firefox 2.0 remains largely unchanged. It includes a new feature for horizontally scrolling tabs and the ability to restore (undo) tabs that users accidentally closed.
Users can download the preview software for Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but it will overwrite the version of Firefox currently in use. A “portable version”, allowing for testing without affecting existing browser settings, is also available.
