On the morning of May 19, Chợ Rẫy Hospital held a consultation regarding the first case of Delta muscle fibrosis discovered. The patient, K’ Thiến, a 17-year-old high school sophomore from Thôn 3, Lộc Thành, Bảo Lộc, Lâm Đồng, was admitted on the afternoon of May 18 due to suffering from the condition known as “wing droop” for over six years. Currently, she is unable to close her arms and has recently experienced wrist pain.
According to family members, she received a vaccination in her left arm about 20 days after birth. At the age of 2, she consumed a lot of cassava leaves, which led to severe poisoning. When she was 4, she suffered from pneumonia and measles, spending about 2-3 weeks in the hospital where she received continuous antibiotic injections into her Delta muscle. By the fourth grade, she began to show signs of “wing droop” which progressively worsened.
Dr. Trương Văn Việt, the hospital director, has requested a thorough investigation to fully assess the condition of the Delta muscle and other muscle groups that have atrophied prior to surgery. The hospital will implement a research project focused on 20 specialists to clarify the causes of this illness.
“On average, our department is performing surgery on 6-9 children suffering from Delta muscle atrophy in Ba Vì, Hà Tây each day. Next week, we plan to go to Vĩnh Phúc to perform surgery on affected children and transfer techniques. We will do our utmost, even though many children have already undergone surgery but… have not yet paid” – said Nguyen Van Loc, Deputy Director of the Children’s Hospital Central on May 19.
According to Mr. Loc, the beginning of May marked a peak period for Delta muscle fibrosis. Two weeks ago, there were 200 patients from Ba Vì, Hà Tây who came for examinations, with many of them suffering from Delta muscle atrophy in both arms.
