A new dangerous program has been discovered within the software package from Sun Microsystems, and it is not being spread with malicious intent. However, this virus code could potentially be modified to target the open-source product OpenOffice 2.0.
The Russian security company Kaspersky Lab has named this version Stardust. It utilizes macros (a group of commands that manipulate data) and is hidden within a template document. When a user opens a file containing Stardust, any text related to the StarOffice office application suite with the extensions .sxw or .stw will also become infected.
Roel Schouwenberg, an analyst at Kaspersky Lab, stated that Stardust employs an outdated API (application programming interface) and may have been created by some “teenage” hacker.
