Cyanide Substance (Photo: cdifx) |
The mass fish deaths in the Saigon River are attributed to cyanide toxins found in wastewater discharged by the Vifon flour mill. Testing results indicate that the fresh cassava used to produce flour at Vifon has a very high concentration of hydrogen cyanide (HCN).
The mass fish deaths that occurred on April 17 coincided with the timing of wastewater discharge into the Saigon River by the Vifon flour processing plant.
The National Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Disease Prevention in the Southern Region has reported the cause of the fish deaths in the Saigon River to the relevant authorities.
An expert stated that cyanide is a highly toxic substance found in fresh cassava, capable of dissolving in water. For humans, ingesting a small amount of cyanide (0.15-0.2 grams) can be lethal. A member of the inspection team mentioned that they have proposed enforcing the removal of fish farming households from the Dau Tieng reservoir and ensuring that factories along the river cease wastewater discharge to protect the water source.
