Some people explain that due to a lack of oxygen, fish jump out of the water to seek air.
Recently, a clip has been circulating on social media showing a large school of fish jumping out of the water at Linh Dam Lake (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi). The clip was recorded by local residents on the evening of September 18th.
For many, this is a strange phenomenon, witnessed for the first time. Most people are curious about what causes fish to jump out of the water. Some express concern about whether there is an issue with the water quality in the lake, while others suggest it might be due to excessive algae growth, or heavy rain over several days reducing oxygen levels in the water, prompting the fish to jump in search of oxygen.

Regarding this phenomenon, Mr. Kim Van Tieu, former Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), stated in an interview with Dan Viet newspaper that the synchronized jumping of fish out of the water at Linh Dam Lake is a normal occurrence. Mr. Tieu believes that concerns about fish jumping due to low oxygen levels, pollution, or storms are unfounded.
According to Mr. Tieu, fish are attracted to light at night, which brings them to the surface and causes them to swim in schools. When startled, they jump out of the water, which is a normal behavior for fish.
“Sometimes, when we paddle a boat to an area with many fish, they automatically jump out of the water. They sense the disturbance, and when one jumps, the whole school follows,” Mr. Tieu explained.
In many places, fish are trained to be fed, and they will immediately leap out of the water when food is thrown.
