A new study adds reliable scientific evidence that using a thick blanket can help improve sleep quality.
Thick blankets create a sensation of warmth and comfort while sleeping. According to a recent study led by researchers from Flinders University and the University of Adelaide in Australia, this warmth offers three main benefits: enhancing mood, reducing reliance on sleeping pills, and improving sleep quality.
On October 27, ScienceAlert reported that the evidence is strong enough for health experts to officially recommend the use of thick blankets for patients suffering from insomnia.

“In therapy, thick blankets are commonly used as a supportive tool across various age groups, yet there are currently no clinical guidelines on their usage,” said medical expert Suzanne Dawson, who works at Flinders University.
The research team reviewed 18 previous studies analyzing the effects of using thick blankets overnight. Although the studies varied in detail and the number of participants—from 1 to 4,092 volunteers—the team compared the data and concluded that thick blankets have a positive impact, such as improving sleep quality and the speed at which individuals fall asleep.
Interestingly, these findings apply only to adults. The researchers indicated that further analysis is needed to confirm the pros and cons of thick blankets for children, although some parents report that their children seem more comfortable, less anxious, and more focused on daytime activities when they are covered with a blanket while sleeping.
Additionally, when using blankets for children with cognitive difficulties, parents should opt for blankets that children can easily push off.
The research team conducted this analysis with the intention of discovering clinical guidelines for the use of thick blankets. They also aim to formalize certain standards in blanket design, including weight and material.
The team concluded that using a thick blanket while sleeping is a relatively simple method that most people can try to enhance their sleep quality.
“Sleep is a basic human need. When a person does not get enough sleep, they may face numerous health issues, as well as an increased risk of exacerbating chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and severe mental health problems,” Ms. Dawson stated.
The study was published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.
